Tristan da Cunha is the main island of a group of small volcanic islands on the eastern flank of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, an undersea mountain range running from North to South Pole in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Tristan’s origin is known as a hot spot, a place where magma periodically erupts from the depths of the earth.

Tristan, and its neighbouring islands, lies about 400 km east of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The base of the volcano is at 3700 m below sea-level, and the summit is at almost 2100 m. above sea-level.
