Glaciology, scientific discipline concerned with all aspects of ice on landmasses. It deals with the structure and properties of glacier ice, its formation and distribution, the dynamics of ice flow, and the interactions of ice accumulation with climate. Glaciological research is conducted with a variety of methods.

Glaciology (PhD) The course provides a systematic survey of modern research into glacial processes, and the response of glaciers and ice sheets to climate change. Lectures will cover recent changes to arctic glaciers, the principles of mass balance measurement and modelling, glacier hydrology, glacier motion and dynamics, surges, calving and remote sensing. We use degree-day, temperature index and full physical energy balance approaches and apply our models to both clean-ice and debris-covered glacial environments. As well as model development, our work focuses on improving the models input variables.

Which are key performance indicators
At a minimum, you need a bachelor's degree in geology, with classes in glaciology. To enhance your job prospects, especially in research and university teaching, pursue a master's degree or Ph.D.
The required specialization consists of 80 ECTS credits and consists of: 40 ECTS credits at bachelor's level in subject areas offered by the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo. where at least 20 ECTS credits are advanced courses at bachelor's level, of which at least 10 ECTS credits are within hydrology and/or geomorphology. A degree in a science subject, followed by a Masters and most likely a PhD is the route into becoming a professional glaciologist.

Glaciology at the University of Washington includes course curriculum and research related to all of these components of ice in the environment. Sophie Goliber has been a Geological Sciences PhD student at UTIG since August 2017. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Buffalo where she got into remote sensing and glaciology research. Her fascination with the cryosphere drew her to UTIG and working with Ginny Catania who shared her interests Tyson McKinney The Unit of Geography – part of the University of Fribourg Department of Geosciences – offers a specialised master's degree in Dynamics in Glaciology and Geomorphology. The degree focuses on current environmental research problems within regions of high altitude and latitude and is aimed at students from backgrounds other than geography . Glaciology is the study of ice in the environment.
