Born in Owen Sound, Ontario, Yurkiw made her World Cup debut at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, in a downhill event in January 2007. Larisa Yurkiw was one of the top 3 downhill ski racers in the world, an accomplished entrepreneur -- and one of the first global athletes in this sport to combine these two skills in what became known around the world as "Team Larisa." In April 2013, Yurkiw founded Team Larisa after she was not named to the Canadian Alpine Ski Team for 2013-14 and needed to find her own funding for the season’s training and travel. Her efforts were rewarded in December 2013 when she posted her career-best World Cup result, finishing seventh in the downhill at Lake Louise. Larisa Yurkiw has been ski racing internationally since 2005. Following a knee injury that sidelined Larisa for two full seasons, she was cut from the National Ski Team in April 2013. As the only Canadian female racing 130km/hr, she started Team Larisa as her launchpad to being amongst the fastest skiers in the world.
