Rickettsia je rod gramnegativních, pleomorfních bakterií z čeledi Rickettsiacae. Jedná se o obligátní intracelulární patogeny, jež napadají buňky retikulo-endoteliálního systému, zejména monocyty či buňky endotelu. Přenášejí se výhradně přes vektory, nejčastěji klíšťata, vši, roztoče a blechy.
