The concept of heterochrony, that the relative timing of ontogenetic events can shift during evolution, has been a major paradigm for understanding the role of developmental processes in evolution. In this paper we consider heterochrony from the perspective of developmental biology.
Medical definition of heterochrony: deviation from the typical embryological sequence of formation of organs and parts as a factor in evolution.
An evolutionary phenomenon that involves changes in the rate and timing of development. As animals and plants grow from their earliest embryonic stages to the adult, they undergo changes in shape and size. 1988, Inbunden. James Hanken 4.1 Introduction If there is one topic that can be most closely associated with the tremendous resurgence of interest in the relation between evolution and development that characterized biology in the late 1970s and 1980s, then surely it is heterochrony.

Heterochrony, that is, evolutionary changes in the relative timing of developmental events and processes, has emerged as a key concept that links evolution and development. Genes associated with heterochrony encode molecular components of developmental timing mecha-nisms. However, our understanding of how heterochrony genes alter the expression Consequently, heterochrony applied to such forms cannot result in evolutionary change in shape.
Heterochrony describes evolution in the timing of developmental traits and has been an important concept for explanations of phenotypic diversity. Heterochronic processes have the potential to produce tremendous diversification of forms by varying the ontogenetic timing and rate of trait development.
n. A change or set of Heterochrony (from the Greek hetero meaning "other" and chronos meaning "time") describes a change in the timing of ontogenetic events between two taxa. These can be the result of relatively small genetic changes that may not even be alterations in DNA sequence, but in the timing of particular genes being expressed during development. Medical definition of heterochrony: deviation from the typical embryological sequence of formation of organs and parts as a factor in evolution. Introduction.

Consequently, heterochrony applied to such forms cannot result in evolutionary change in shape. This paper demonstrates the effect of heterochronic modes on an allometric model in which the parameters of a helicoid spiral cone vary through ontogeny.
Frog species are often characterized by minor differences in relative hind-limb length. Although the length of the hind limb generally correlates with locomotor In looking beyond heterochrony, this book attends to a variety of explanations for evolutionary development. The chapters present theoretical and practical 'Heterotopia' means a change in the position of a structure, and relates more directly to modern developmental biology than does heterochrony, because of the Heterochrony.
